Rembrandt van Rijn created ‘The Donkey of the Prophet Balaam’ during the Dutch Golden Age, around 1626. This painting illustrates a biblical scene from the Book of Numbers where the prophet Balaam is journeying on his donkey. An angel of the Lord blocks his path as Balaam, unaware of the divine presence, beats the donkey. The donkey, able to see the angel, refuses to move forward, saving Balaam’s life from divine punishment.
